Education Center for Korean as a Foreign LanguageIntroduction

1. Outline

Since 1992, thanks to the dedication and professionalism of our instructors, over 10,300 students have graduated from the Pai Chai University Korean Education Center. Currently, 350 students from outside Korea are studying at the center. Due to the success of the center at training international students, Pai Chai University Education Center for Korean as a Foreign Languagewas accredited by the National Institute for International Education. In 2011 and 2012, foreign experts in Korean were invited to take part in training programs at our center. The center is currently a designated institution of graduate studies for foreign scholars.

2. Operational objectives

Foreigners who want to attend graduate school in Korea require Korean language to be taught systematically. By studying together, Korean students and international students can interact, and share ideas and cultures. It is hoped that this will contribute to a broader awareness of the globalization of Korea.

3. Other remarks

a) Making a quality curriculum and efficient management system for international students
  • (i) Hangeul Day, 2007. Selected for the President’s Award in the English education section of the 26th Sejong Cultural Prizes.
  • (ii) Selected for GKS Scholarship by the National Institute for International Education. (In 2008 training was conducted for 43 people, in 2009, 29 people).
  • (iii) Established an efficient management system for international students (Operated by the Department for International Affairs and Student Services).
b) Operating with excellent lecturers and research staff.
  • (i) A total of 32 instructors in Korean Education.
  • (ii) Conducting workshops four times a year to improve teaching, offering student counseling, training research, and creating management systems for students.
  • (iii) Instructors participate in the committee for writing TOPIK questions and grading the test with the National Institute for International Education.
c) Preparing for the TOPIK.

Establishment of a special TOPIK class for students to help prepare for the test, and to gain qualifications.

d) Development of materials related to Korean language education.

A variety of materials are used in order to develop the most efficient method of delivery for Korean language education. In 2013, the doctrine was perfected with the assistance and participation of Indonesian secondary schools. In 2014, textbooks for levels 1 through 4 were developed from scratch, and have been in use since September 2015.

e) The operation of Sejong Korean Language academies overseas

Affiliated with the Department of Culture, Tourism, and Sports, the foundation of overseas language academies in five countries (Brazil, Indonesia, Algeria, Zimbabwe, and China) with a total of 4 locations in China, has seen excellent instructors dispatched worldwide.

4.3 Curriculum and textbooks
1) Basic level (Levels 1~2)
This course is for beginners learning Korean language for the first time. Students will begin by learning the vowels and consonants of Hangul, the Korean alphabet and move onto simple Korean sentences. By the end of the semester, students will be able to use Korean in everyday situations.

2) Intermediate Level (Levels 3~4)
The aim of the course is to enable students to navigate the essentials of Korean life, such as greeting others, going to the market, making phone calls, going to the bank, and more. This allows the student to integrate more into society.

3) Advanced Level (Levels 5~6)
This high-level program advances students’ knowledge of Korean through writing and discussion. Students will be able to discuss advanced topics such as politics and the economy through writing. The aim of the course is to foster intellectual capacity through Korean language ability.
